Abstract

Sofia Dutka (Zofia Dutkowna), a Polish woman, was incarcerated in Ravensbrueck (Ravensbruck) female concentration camp from 1941 through 1944. She wrote letters on the officially provisioned letter-form to her family member addressing those Dear Siblings. Letters addressed to a single person, perhaps one of her sisters, namely, Rozalia Dutka in the village of Mordarka near Limanowa (Limanowa county) of the Vojevodstwo Malopolskie (West Little Poland or West Galicia). In the wartime, under the German occupation it was officially renamed as General Government (Gouvernement)

Scope and Contents of the Materials

This Collection comprises letters on the camp official letter forms send from the Ravensbrueck (Ravensbruck) female concentration camp by Sofia Dutka (Zofia Dutka or Dutkowna), addressed to one of her sisters Rozalia Dutka. All correspondences were censored. These correspondences are written in German, not a native language of Sofia Dutka. It is regarded it was either her or someone on her behalf narrated these letters. Concentration camp regulations provisioned correspondence only in German language.

It is believed that Sofia Dutka (Zofia Dutkowna) was incarcerated as political prisoner. Her correspondences from the Ravensbrueck (Ravensbruck) female concentration camp lasted from 1941 through 1944.

“My dear siblings, thank you very much for your letter that I received on September 11. Those always are my only joy. Thank you for the packages, I got the ones with apples and bread. Sadly the apples made the bread go bad and I couldn’t use it. Please don’t send bread and apples in the same package. It’s glad to hear that the wheat is good. Please send greetings to Jagusia. How is it with the vegetables and potatoes? Do you have a dairy cow? I send greetings to all of you, your sister. Zofia”

I’m happy that you are healthy and that our brother promised to visit, pray that we’re going to see each other soon. I wonder about how you come to harvest during spring. I’m happy to hear that Zygmunt works for our dear uncle. I send greetings to both of them. I thank you for the package you sent to me and the things you sent with it but I’m fine and I don’t need anymore. I tell you otherwise. I am healthy and I keep thinking about when I’m going to see you. I send greetings to the family Jagusia.
