Abstract

This record group comprises series of Nazi periodicals, personal library of Anton Karl, family and personal photo-albums and Anton Karl’s military documents, passports and other identification documents. A sub-collection of its own right is a full gear of his cavalry uniform kept in a special suitcase. This suitcase was sent back to his family in Germany, when lieutenant-colonel Anton Karl was killed near Ternopol in Western Ukraine in the Spring of 1944.

Collection Historical Note

This record group is a multifaceted collection of personal, official and public documents. While some relate to the career of Captain Anton Karl, the corpus of the documents and artifacts as an entity is well-waratned representation of prewar and wartime History of Germany. Largely these documents relate to the military history, although the fate of the given German officer and his family is well represented.

Socila and military life of German society is represented by various periodicals, personal correspondences, official documents and wide array of photo-documents and personal possesions.

The autobiography of the First World War ace fighter pilot Manfred Freiherr von Richthofen entitled Der rote Kampfflieger (The Red Fighter Pilot). Richthofen was nicknamed the Red Baron because of his red fighter plane and his skill in battle. The book was originally published in 1917, with additions made later by Bolko von Richthofen, a distant relative, and Hermann Goring, a fellow fighter pilot and leading member of the Nazi party. Anton Karl acquired this book from military school during the Second World War.

The cover of the National Socialist Official Newspaper with a message from Hermann Neef, a leading member of the Nazi party and the chief editor of the newspaper (February 28, 1943). His message explains that while in this time of war, everyone must make sacrifices for the cause. He also says his goodbyes, as he is leaving his post at the newspaper, to take a different position in the Nazi government. This particular newspaper also has a handwritten note from Erich Karl to his father Anton, explaining that he is sending his father the newspaper and sends his regards (March 15, 1943). The back of the newspaper is covered in German advertisements.

A personal book belonging to Anton Karl during the Second World War. The book, by German-born Friedrich Gerstaecker, is entitled Die beiden Straeflinge (The Two Convicts) and is an Australian adventure novel about a virtuous bushranger, or outlaw in the Australian bush in the early years of English settlement. Perhaps the novel was inspired by the years Gerstaecker spent traveling through Australia. Originally published in 1857. Karl’s copy published in 1939.

A German book about the German infantrymen that battled and conquered France from 1939 to 1940. The author, W. Hoeppener-Flatow, paints the anonymous soldiers as heroes who won the greatest battle on earth. This book's full title is Eine Kompanie marschiert... Infanteristen kampfen in Frankreich (The Company Marches On...Infantrymen fight in France). It was published in 1941 by Steiniger-Verlage, Berlin. There is a personal note on the first page written to Anton Karl's son explaining that this book is a Christmas gift for him for the third Christmas of the war from his family (December 24, 1941).

A funeral prayer card for Max Fleischmann, date of death June 10, 1942 at the age of 70 years and 8 months. The funeral prayer card includes a Roman Catholic prayer written in German on one side and an illustration of Jesus and the Virgin Mary on the other. There are two photographs of Max, one alone at work and one of Max with friends and family. All of these items are contained in an envelope, marked with a small note indicating the envelope belongs to the Fleishmann family.

A copy of a message from Kreis II to Franz explaining that donations were pooled together for Franz to get a haircut and shave, since he does not have the financial means. Most likely, Franz is Jewish, in which case it goes his religious beliefs to shave his beard. It was common for Nazis to publicly cut the beards of Jews in order to punish and humilate them. It was also a common stereotype in Germany and Europe that Jews were cheap, and so the letter mockingly offers to pay for his haircut. Above this message is perhaps a poem or song insulting the district’s vicar and several of its female members who are either Jewish or do not support the Nazi’s cause. This letter is a form of humiliation and intimidation, not uncommon at the onset of the Second World War.

This book is the autobiography of General Hermann-Bernhard Ramcke, a general of the German Second Parachute Division in the Second World War. He was a decorated Nazi-General who eventually went to prison for his war crimes, only to escape seven years later as an extremist National Socialist. The book follows his journey from being a ship’s boy when he joined the German Imperial Army in 1905 to his transition to the Reichswehr during the Weimar Republic period. He continued to serve in the new Wehrmacht during the Third Reich, where he received the most accolades. The book was published in 1943 by the Verlag Die Wehrmacht publishers in Berlin.
